| powder/ceramic coating exhaust 919
found this company Jet-Hot that does colored powder coating and ceramic coating, total cost is $235, i want my pipes done in red, i think it would really set the bike off, does anyone have any opinions on this? it is mainly a cosmetic upgrade, but also is used to protect the pipes since i live on the ocean and salt mist is a huge problem.

I think the red pipes look good in the pics. Makes the pipes really stand out. looks good with the red plug wires and spring for the rear shock. I say if you like it go for it.

I have jet-hot coated race car headers in the past. I did one really unique set in blue by Jet Hot. The color suprised me, it was great work and finish, but the blue was a very flat and pale blue, it seemed to me that the guys I knew running the Jet Hot with Silver or black, also had flat, pale shades of their colors. I was thinking of getting my heat sheild JH coated, just for a unique look, but I would go for a grey or black, due to my experience with the blue jet hot coating. |

I'd rather be dead than Red on the Hed....ders! Actually the red hedders in those pics don't look as bad as I thought it would. If it looks good to you, do it. |

The ceramic coatings, actually cermets, are suitable for exhaust system's heat and environment and will last quite a while, but the color coatings are heat paint which will be much more susceptable to flaking off when hit by sand or small rocks. IME the part of the headers exposed to the spray from the front wheel will start looking decidedly second hand quickly. You'll notice the color section does not mention headers amongst the specifically named parts -- unless you lump them in with Quote:

Don't do it. People will think that you're a fag that can't ride. Don't ask for my opinion if you don't want it. IMHO your bike looks pretty damn tough the way it is. But if you want to do a little something, get rid of the garden hose lookin brake likes and get some nice stainless steel brake lines. That will project a lot better image. Easy to do and you'll like the feel. |

I've also been a fan of coloured headers if the colour is a good match, and the finish can be kept clean and newish looking. The orange 4:1 headers I did in 74 for my 73, really looked ratty by the end of the season. Flat black was much more forgiving. Otherwise it would be matter of reblasting and repainting every season. My Mom did not like the sound of that, because I used the kitchen oven to do all the paint baking. Just like I used the dishwasher for cleaning parts, replete with varsol enhanced cleaning action, and hung plastic sheets to convert the laundry room to a spray booth for all the painting. I smile just thinking about those days ! Thanks for making a post about coloured headers !!!!
