First maiden voyage today around the block, LOADS OF FUN!!!

Today I got the chain and seat, the last few pieces stopping me from riding. Legally, its not ready. But just in my neighborhood it was a blast. Felt just like riding the Triumph Scrambler. Tires are surprisingly smooth, and I love the seating position.

Oh yeah!!! The sound coming out of the exhaust is awesome.
A bit loud but not too obnoxious.
No way I'm changing the exhaust to CL now.

Stills lots of things to fix.
1.) Treat tank
2.) New carbs
3.) Fix oil leak in crank

I nominate this for bike of the month, it's got my vote.

FYI, I've seen carb rebuild kits out there for this bike if you feel like doing that.

Nice job. That's really looking good. I kinda got blown away by the choice of tires, but I could get used to that. She is really looking clean.

I like it much more than when I saw it in our garage last.
Maybe I will be in town one weekend so I can actually see it again.
Guess I better keep an eye on Craig's list for an upcoming project.....

I've been wanting to find a project bike to play with. This just gets me wanting one even more... So, how much was the total for the project to date (or do I want to ask?)

Looks great, good job!

Very nice job Simps. You really make me wish I hadn't abandoned my '78 CB550K. I'd love to find another one for a project bike, but most of the ones I find have already had someone like you manhandle it, then sell it for multi-thousand dollars. I bought mine (in bad shape) for $500. Sigh. Would love to have that baby back.

Time to hit craigslist...

I really like this bike and I must be the only one that thinks that those tires really make it look bitchin' even if you wasn't gonna take it off road!

Tank is treated and fixed!
Oil leak is fixed!

This carburetor is freak'n killing me. Every time I take it off (about ten and counting), take it all apart, clean everything, put it all back together, adjust accordingly, I get a completely different results...

Basically I can't get both cylinders to fire at same time or smoothly. Just can't seem to syn'c them. When i get them both to fire, it tend to run rich and backfire, smoke. When only one cylinder runs, its clean and smoother.

Very frustrated, and its the last big thing fix. Since I was a kid and rode these things, they baffled me then. I'm truly perplexed on how to troubleshoot and adjust correctly. Thinking about giving it to the local shop..

Suggestion welcomed...

WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL...............
I took one more stab at fixing the carburetors tonight...

Recap of three attempted trips in my hood
1.) Sputtered and ran like crap but stayed running
2.) Acted like it ran out of gas 50 feet outside my garage
3.) Acted like it ran out of gas 50 feet outside my garage

Tends to run on only one cylinder, this changes pending on my carb rework jobs???

Pulled Carbs off.
Adjusted the floats to percision!
clean/lub and assembled
quick check on the points for gap again for good measure
Just a quick start
Both cylinders SEEM to run after a 4-5 sec run, with some sputtering
Both pipes seem equally warm, which is encouraging
Ill start it tomorrow and see what happens
Didn't wanna pis off neighbors with revving motors at 1:00am

If this doesn't work probably take it to the shop!

Thoughts on what I could do to fix are appreciated...

You have come a long way with this project, don't take the bike to a shop.

In a earlier post you indicated a rip in one of the vacuum diaphragms. This could be part of your problem, RTV is not the answer. It should be replaced.

These carburetors must have been sitting for ages with stale gas. A thorough cleaning is of the utmost importance. What I mean by thorough is: Soaking all parts in carburetor cleaner. To insure all orifices are clean run a thin piece of wire into all the tiny holes including the jets. Pay close attention to the pilot jets. Use a air gun to insure everything is clean prior to assembly.

After final assembly, set the idle screws to 3/4 turn from fully closed. Don't remember for sure if they are fuel or air screws. If they are on the front section of the carb. it is a fuel adjustment. Fire up the bike. Within 1 minute spray each exhaust header with water where it connects to the engine. The water should immediately turn to steam. It should not just bubble off. This is how to determine which cylinder is running fine or maybe there is a problem with both.

One step at a time, once you get both cylinders running properly I can give you some direction on synchronization. Let me know if your model year carburetors have access holes for connecting vacuum hoses which are used in conjunction with a monometer for synchronization.

I havent bought it in years, but you used to be able to buy a bucket of Carb cleaner stuff instead of the spray cans, you soak your parts in it and it works way better than trying to use spray stuff.

Get yourself a synchronizing tool. I had many of the same troubles on my '87 Virago 535. Once I invested in the simple to use tool the thing ran great. I could actually squak the tire on a launch. A must have tool when dealing with carbs.

Took it to a friend who owns a shop and checked the following

1.) sync/vacuum with mercury meter
2.) Point gap
3.) Timing

Still has ISSUES...

Okay, its running now at an "about average" tuning...

Problems found:

1.) New Spark Plugs bought would not spark for reasons I could never possible explain???? Yes, it sounds crazy but I tested them over and over. About 1-2 hours of life on them. Why question it when a new set is 5 bucks.

2.) Connection terminals to gap points shorting on cover when tighten down. That's what created the 50 foot stall, maybe.

3.) Over filled crank with oil, hey the owners manual said two quarts!!! Probably should have check dip stick better.

New Problems that I suspect:
1.) Hard knock in engine. Hoping thats 32 year old charm talking back
2.) Exhaust smokes on left side, hoping thats from over filling crank case

DOH!!!

Well it idles pretty smooth now and starts right up. Took it for a cruise around the block and it struggles at high speeds (darn carburetor!!!).

Update:

Been reading up on tuning and adjusting engine...

1.) Awful knocking is getting better. Adjusted tension on timing chain and changed out oil again.
2.) Smoking from left side has stopped. Not really sure what that came from. Reading the owners manual, i had the right amount of oil. You are suppose to check oil with dip stick without screwing it all way in...

Engine is getting smoother over all. Idles real nice now! I've been making changes on timing based on listening to engine. Took it for a ride and its the smoothest running so far. Still have a distance. Something is not right in the mid ran and the right side cylinder cuts out when I give it extra throttle? When both cylinders are firing, the report note is SO sweet. Music to my ears.

you just need to run it up 125mph and blow those cylinders clean. a little octane booster and an afternoon at the dragstrip and she'll be purring like a kitten.

I'm afraid of getting the RPMs over 5000-6000 right now. My confidence is very low. I'm hoping thats the case, break it in and the engine smooths right out.
